John explains to Bernard how he doesn't feel accepted in the village because his mother slept with so many men. Linda comes across a lover named Popé who brings her mescal and allows her to get drunk. All the while, John is out and about in the village embracing the culture. We learned that John can read and actually read Shakespeare to the point of recital because he felt the book helped him fit in.
Bernard later asks John to go to London with him as he plots to expose the Director as John's father, without John knowing his plan. John agrees but requests Linda travel with them. Bernard says he'll see if he can get approval for the both of them. John is overwhelmed and quotes The Tempest to express himself saying, "O brave new world that has such people in it."
